Your Autumn Skincare Reset: 5 Changes Your Skin Actually Needs

Your Autumn Skincare Reset: 5 Changes Your Skin Actually Needs

THE AUTUMN SKIN EDIT

There is always a moment in October when your skincare starts behaving differently. The moisturiser you loved all summer suddenly seems to disappear by lunchtime. Your cheeks feel tighter after cleansing. Foundation settles in places it never used to. And that bright, easy summer complexion begins looking a little less cooperative.

It is tempting to interpret this as a sign that your entire routine needs replacing.

It probably doesn't.

The best autumn skincare routine isn't a completely new collection of products. It is a few thoughtful adjustments that help your skin stay comfortable, hydrated and protected as the weather changes.

At our store, we prefer to look at what has changed before deciding what needs to be added.

Here are the five adjustments worth considering as we move into the colder months in Ireland.

1. Your Cleanser Might Be Doing Too Much

Let's begin with the product that rarely gets the attention it deserves.

Your cleanser.

During summer, lighter gel cleansers and foaming formulas can feel refreshing. They help remove excess oil, sweat, sunscreen and makeup.

But as the weather changes, some people begin noticing that their skin feels increasingly tight after washing.

It might feel clean. Almost squeaky.

That isn't necessarily a good thing.

Cleansing should remove impurities without leaving skin unnecessarily stripped of its natural lipids.

When should you change your cleanser?

Consider reviewing your cleansing routine if:

  • Your face feels tight immediately after washing.
  • Your cheeks are becoming dry or flaky.
  • Products that previously felt comfortable now sting.
  • Your skin appears redder after cleansing.
  • You are using several exfoliating ingredients alongside a strong cleanser.

A gentler cleanser may be a better choice than adding another hydrating serum to compensate for the dryness.

Remember, the best cleanser is not the one that makes your skin feel the cleanest. It is the one that leaves your skin comfortable enough for the rest of your routine.

2. Your Skin Might Need More Moisture, Not More Actives

Autumn creates an interesting problem.

Outside, temperatures begin dropping. Inside, central heating returns. Add wind, changing humidity and long days indoors, and your skin can begin feeling less comfortable.

Lower humidity, cold air and heated indoor environments can contribute to increased moisture loss and dryness.

But here's where skincare becomes confusing.

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are not exactly the same thing.

Dry skin tends to lack sufficient oil or skin lipids.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. It can occur alongside oily, combination or dry skin.

This is why someone can have a shiny forehead and tight cheeks at the same time.

What should you add to your autumn routine?

Look for ingredients that address both hydration and moisture retention.

  • Hyaluronic acid: Helps attract and retain water within the skin.
  • Glycerin: A reliable humectant that supports hydration.
  • Ceramides: Important components of the skin barrier.
  • Squalane: An emollient that helps soften skin.
  • Panthenol: Supports hydration and skin comfort.

A lightweight hydrating serum followed by a suitable moisturiser often makes more sense than several layers of treatment products.

3. Autumn Is a Good Time to Reassess Your Retinal Routine

For anyone interested in fine lines, uneven texture or skin longevity, autumn often brings renewed interest in vitamin A.

Retinol and retinal are vitamin A derivatives used in skincare to help improve the appearance of ageing and uneven texture.

They can be valuable ingredients, but they also require patience.

And autumn is not a free pass to begin using the strongest formula available.

Should you start retinal in autumn?

You can introduce a suitable retinoid at any time of year. Autumn can be a convenient moment to build a consistent evening routine, but the season itself does not remove the risk of irritation.

If you're new to vitamin A:

  1. Choose an appropriate beginner strength.
  2. Begin with a couple of evenings per week.
  3. Apply according to the product instructions.
  4. Follow with a comfortable moisturiser.
  5. Increase frequency gradually as your skin tolerates it.

There is no advantage in pushing through burning, significant peeling or persistent redness.

In fact, a lower-strength formula used comfortably and consistently may be a much better choice than something stronger that repeatedly irritates your skin.

Already using a stronger retinal successfully? You do not need to stop because temperatures are dropping. You may, however, need to adjust how often you use it if your skin becomes drier.

Important: Avoid topical retinoids during pregnancy. Seek medical guidance when breastfeeding or if you're using prescription treatments.

4. Your Moisturiser Should Match Your Skin Now, Not Last July

We often become loyal to moisturisers.

We find one that works, repurchase it several times and assume it will continue performing exactly the same way throughout the year.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes your skin simply needs a different texture.

During warmer months, a gel cream may feel perfect. In colder weather, you might prefer a richer cream, especially in the evening.

That does not mean every skin type requires a thick moisturiser.

Oily skin can still benefit from a lightweight gel.

Dry skin may need a cream containing a mixture of humectants, emollients and barrier-supporting lipids.

Combination skin may benefit from applying a richer moisturiser only to areas that need it.

How to know if your moisturiser is enough

Ask yourself:

  • Does my skin feel comfortable an hour after applying it?
  • Does it still feel comfortable towards the end of the day?
  • Is my makeup sitting normally?
  • Am I experiencing tightness or flaky patches?

If your skin stays comfortable, there may be no reason to change anything.

If it doesn't, make one adjustment at a time.

Our clinical moisturiser collection is a useful place to compare different textures and formulations.

5. Keep Your SPF. Even When the Sunshine Disappears

Perhaps the most important autumn skincare advice is also the least seasonal.

Keep using your sunscreen.

Ireland has a way of making sun protection feel unnecessary once September ends.

The beach bag has been packed away. The coats are back. The sky is grey before breakfast.

But ultraviolet radiation does not disappear because the temperature drops.

UVA exposure contributes to premature skin ageing and pigmentation. UVB levels change more noticeably with the season, and the UV index is an important guide to sunburn risk.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF remains a sensible habit for people protecting against photoageing and pigmentation, particularly when spending time outdoors or in daylight near windows.

The Autumn Routine We'd Actually Recommend

The most effective routine is usually the one you can maintain every day.

Morning

Step 1: Gentle cleanse

Use a comfortable cleanser or rinse with lukewarm water if that suits your skin.

Step 2: Targeted serum

Choose vitamin C, hydration or another serum appropriate for your main concern.

Step 3: Moisturiser

Add enough moisture to keep your skin comfortable through the day.

Step 4: SPF

Finish with broad-spectrum sun protection.

Evening

Step 1: Cleanse

Remove sunscreen, makeup and daily impurities.

Step 2: Treat

Use retinal on suitable evenings if your skin tolerates it. Keep other evenings focused on hydration.

Step 3: Moisturise

Finish with a moisturiser appropriate for the season and your skin type.

Three steps in the evening. Four in the morning.

For most people, that is an excellent foundation.

What We Wouldn't Change Just Because It's October

There is a difference between adapting your skincare and starting again.

If your vitamin C serum is working, keep it.

If your moisturiser still feels comfortable, keep it.

If your retinal is helping and your skin tolerates it, there is no reason to replace it with a stronger formula.

If your skin barrier is struggling, don't immediately add another exfoliant in the hope of improving dullness.

Sometimes the best adjustment is reducing how much you're doing.

A Better Routine for the Season Ahead

The change from summer to autumn is a reminder that skincare is not static.

Your skin responds to its environment, your habits and the products you use.

A routine that worked beautifully in July might need some extra support by November.

That is completely normal.

What matters is knowing what to change and what to leave alone.

Our approach is to keep the products that are working, improve the steps that are not, and make room for a little more comfort as the colder months arrive.
