Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, often called a BHA. It is oil-soluble, so it is commonly used in products for clogged pores, blackheads and blemish-prone skin. Strength, format and frequency all affect how a formula feels, making a gentle leave-on toner different from a concentrated spot treatment or cleanser.

Best suited to oily, combination, congested or blemish-prone skin. Dry or sensitive-feeling skin can still use selected formulas, but should begin slowly and prioritise moisturiser.

Start two or three times per week unless the product directions say otherwise. Apply leave-on formulas after cleansing and before moisturiser. Avoid stacking several exfoliating products in the same routine until you understand your skin's tolerance. Wear broad-spectrum SPF every morning.
